How do I back up my blog?

  1. Download and Install Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is a browser similar to Internet Explorer only faster, safer and more efficient. We're going to use this browser to export our entries because all versions of Internet Explorer have a bug where data marked as plain text can be intrepreted as HTML. The symptom of this bug is that all of your exported data will run together onto one line.
  2. Open your Firefox browser
  3. Log in to your Movable Type like you're adding and entry (i.e. http://www.yourblog.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi - or whatever your url to Movable Type is)
  4. Choose which web log you want to back-up
  5. Click on "Import/Export"
  6. Go down to the bottom of the page where it says "Export Entries"
  7. Click on "Export Entries from [your weblog]"
  8. In your browser, choose View > Source (your export file will open in Notepad)
  9. In Notepad, choose File > Save As
  10. Change File Name to "yourblog.txt" to a directory on your computer

Now you should have a backup of all your old entries in case anything catastrophic should happen to your blog or web host.

Other options for backing up Movable Type:
  1. Install Typemover - a MovableType plugin that backs up and restores all your weblog data, including settings, templates, categories, authors, notification subscriptions, trackbacks and pings.
  2. Link your templates to files on your site
